How WhatsApp and SMS pricing actually works

WhatsApp bills per delivered template message. Since July 2025, Meta charges per message rather than per conversation, with a different rate for marketing, utility and authentication templates in every country. Replies you send inside the 24-hour customer service window are free, which rewards conversational flows.

Rates are wildly unequal by market. A marketing message to Germany can cost more than 10x the same message to India or Turkey. If you sell internationally, channel mix per market is a real budgeting decision, not a rounding error.

SMS bills per 160-character segment. One emoji or curly quote switches the whole message to Unicode encoding and cuts the segment size to 70 characters, so a 150-character message suddenly bills as three segments. The counter above shows the exact switch.

Mix channels by job, not habit. Authentication codes belong on the cheapest reliable channel per market. Marketing pushes earn WhatsApp's richer format where rates allow. Utility updates like shipping notices are cheap almost everywhere and build trust.

How is WhatsApp Business API priced?
Meta charges per delivered template message, with separate rates for marketing, utility and authentication templates that differ by destination country. Replies inside the 24-hour customer service window are free. Your provider may add a small platform fee on top of Meta's rates.
What is an SMS segment?
The billing unit for SMS. A message using only the GSM-7 character set fits 160 characters per segment (153 when split across multiple). Any character outside that set, like an emoji or a curly apostrophe, switches the message to Unicode and shrinks segments to 70 characters (67 when split).
Why did my 150-character SMS bill as 3 segments?
Almost always one stray Unicode character: an emoji, a curly quote pasted from a doc, or an em dash. The counter above highlights when your draft crosses into Unicode encoding.
Are these the exact rates I will pay?
No. They are estimates from Meta's published rate cards and typical aggregator SMS pricing as of August 2026, for budgeting. Exact rates depend on your provider and change over time; Meta has also announced changes to service window rules.
Which is cheaper, SMS or WhatsApp?
It depends entirely on the market and message type. In India and Brazil, WhatsApp utility messages are among the cheapest sends anywhere. In the US, SMS usually wins. That is exactly why this calculator models both per country.
